The One/Eighth second hand beats time in the Radiomir Chrono

The development of the split-seconds chronograph by Panerai is typical of a technical offering that is both modern and intriguing, capable to arousing uncommon horological emotions. To the twin seconds-hand function of the split-seconds chronograph, the Radiomir Chrono one/eighth Second has added a small hand on the counter positioned at 9 o’clock, which moves in steps of One/Eighth of a second and at the rate of one complete revolution a second, so that eighths of a second are displayed in analogue form with maximum precision.

This One/Eighth-second hand is the indicator of a function known as foudroyante, achieved through the perfection of a special mechanism with its own gear train and independent spring barrel, linked to the traditional spring barrel which provides the energy needed for the operation of the watch. The foudroyante function is rarely found because of the considerable difficulties of its construction, but it is one of the most interesting technical novelties of watchmaking. There are a few examples among pocket watches, most of them made during the 19th century, while examples among wristwatches are fairly rare, appearing only recently and operated by a technology which has made it possible to produce movements of proven reliability.

The Panerai Radiomir Chrono One/Eighth Second has this very special device, operated by pressing the push-piece at 2 o’clock which engages the chronograph. The chronograph hands indicate the elapsed time from the start of the measurement: the seconds are indicated by the centre chronograph hands, the minutes are displayed on the appropriate counter at 3 o’clock, and the One/Eighth-seconds are indicated at 9 o’clock by the foudroyante hand. The split-seconds function is operated by the co-axial push-button of the winding crown, with the split hand enabling two events which begin at the same time to be timed separately, with the ability also to check intermediate times. Returning all the hands to zero – including the foudroyante hand – is accomplished by pressing on the zeroing push-piece located at 4 o’clock.

The Radiomir Chrono One/Eighth Second, presented in a series limited to 300 units, has an automatic movement with a balance frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour, a power reserve of 42 hours and a twin column-wheel system for operating the chronograph functions. The technical characteristics of the movements are set off by the steel case, 45 millimetres in diameter and water-resistant to a depth of 100 metres.

In three parts, diameter 45 mm, steel with polished finish, with removable wire loop strap attachments fixed to the case by small screws (Officine Panerai patent). Pump-style chronograph push-pieces at 2 and 4 o’clock, push-button for the split-seconds function co-axial with the winding crown. Sapphire crystal 1.9 mm thick with anti-reflective treatment.

Steel with polished finish.

Caseback:
Steel, secured with screws, with sapphire crystal window.

Water-resistance:
100 metres.

Automatic mechanical, calibre OP XXI, 13¼ lignes, 40 jewels, Glucydur® balance, operating frequency 28,800 vibrations/hour, Incabloc® anti-shock device. Power reserve 42 hours, square grille decoration. COSC Chronometer Certificate.

Hours, minutes and seconds, split-seconds chronograph with foudroyante hand.

Dial:
Black, with luminous baton hour markers and Arabic numerals at 6 and 12 o’clock, minute counter at 3 o’clock, continuous seconds dial at 9 o’clock, twin chronograph seconds hands at the centre. Chronograph seconds scale on the outer edge, tachymeter scale on the flange.
